On the evening of January 22, 2019, Huawei presented a new smartphone, the Honor View 20, in Moscow. It is simply impossible to pass by this novelty, because over the past year, the Honor brand has become very popular among young people—not to mention the fact that on our website we are regularly looking for new items from the above manufacturer. Seeing the number 48 in the designation of the number of megapixels of the camera, there was a sense of deja vu, and the memory of the recent Redmi Note 7 with exactly the same resolution of photos from the main camera. But this is such... a lyrical digression from that point.
The first thing we pay attention to when we look at the phone is its appearance. We can also look at the technical specifications on the internet, but when you look at the new model of the smartphone live, you first see the appearance, the brightness of the screen, etc. Comrades from Inflex Guide, who have already tested the novelty, complained that the Honor View 20 is pushing away its glossy finish. But now it seems to us that the brilliance and the play of the body are quite an interesting move. In any case, in order not to bump the glossy backdrop, you can simply put a case on the smartphone, which on AliExpress is available in bulk.
Honor View 20: Key Features
The Honor View 20 became the first flagship of the brand in 2019, and offers a decent kit: 6 or 8 GB of operating memory and 128 or 256 GB of internal memory, cameras with a resolution of 48 megapixels and 25 megapixels (main and front), and a frameless display, on which you will not find a traditional collar in the spirit of last year's trends. Under the selfie camera, a neat little hole is “cut out,” and on the whole, the entire front surface is occupied by the screen. As you know, Honor smartphones usually play the role of a less expensive alternative to Huawei phones, but this is the exception to the rule. The Honor View 20, though not an analog of the Huawei Mate 20 Pro, has really flagship features.
In the US, sales of new items will start from January 31, 2019, and you can now issue a pre-order for the purchase of the Honor View 20. The price of smartphone bites at 680$ to 760$ for the 6/128 GB and 8/256 GB versions, respectively. If we talk about alternatives, then OnePlus 6T comes to mind. This Chinese brand, like Huawei with Honor, often plays the first position in terms of introducing new technologies into their mobile devices. However, the View 20 is more aggressive and unusual than a OnePlus phone.
In the case of the Honor View 20, the manufacturer talks about using Sony's 48-megapixel IMX586 sensor, which uses all the pixels when shooting in daylight, and combines groups of pixels into large dots for photographing at night. The “hole” under the selfie-camera in the upper left corner of the screen looks unusually (as if a smartphone punched a hole punch) and is likely to become a new trend that other companies will repeat. The fingerprint scanner remained on the back side (although I would like to see a screen here), and a 3.5 mm jack was kept on the bottom side of the smartphone. There is even an infrared port, which is useful for managing consumer electronics.
The Honor View 20 runs on Android 9.0 with EMUI 9.0.1 shell. It can comfortably be cut into mobile games, such as PUBG and Asphalt 9, with the 8-core HiSilicon Kirin 980 processor with the Mali-G76 graphics chip and support for GPU Turbo. At the time of this writing, this is the most advanced processor architecture (7 nm), which surpasses the nearest competitor in performance of the Snapdragon 845 by 10 percent.
Honor View 20: Design and Screen
For the last couple of years, phone manufacturers have preferred to produce smartphones in glass cases with iridescent color gradients. The same fate befell the Honor View 20. Triangular play on the back of the device causes a pleasant impression. If you twist the smartphone in your hands, the arrows will overflow, moving up and down, as if pointing to a charging connector. The gradient effect is also present, and the case has four colors: Aggressive red, calm blue, blue, and black. In general, the look clings immediately.
The width and thickness of the View 20 are 75.4 mm and 8.1 mm, which corresponds to the parameters of OnePlus 6T. This is not a small phone, but the flagship should not be compact, right? However, despite the large size and 6.4-inch display, working with this smartphone is convenient. The display resolution is 1080 by 2310 pixels, the matrix is LTPS, and there is also HDR support (you can watch 10-bit video). The density of dots per inch is lower than that of the Galaxy Note 9, but for the above-mentioned price tag, it’s silly to demand more. Additionally, the sharpness and brightness allow you to adjust the color settings, making the glow of the screen warm or, conversely, cold.
- autonomous work up to two days
- great camera (48 megapixels)
- honest fullscreen display
- no splash protection
- no wireless charging
- still a high price
we can safely say that the Honor View 20 is superior in performance to the Razer Phone 2 gaming phone, which is a very good level. We can recommend this smartphone not only as an alternative to expensive AAA technology, but also as a full-fledged gaming mobile device.
