Smart homes.

Even the name sounds like something that you'd expect a pretentious technology hoarder to boast about. To a point, having a smart home is something that's seen as excessive or overly expensive to many of us. After all, analog homes are pretty cool already, right?

Well, yes, they are — but smart homes have a lot of perks that regular homes simply can't compare to. Once you really consider all the advantages of a smart home setup, it's hard not to want to get your home outfitted with Alexa, too.

A smart home can actually save you money on electrical bills.

For many people out there, one of the more surprising advantages of a smart home is the savings you get over the long term. Many smart devices are designed to help program your home's functions in a way that saves energy while maximizing comfort.

A good example of how much money you can save per year can be seen with the electrical bill savings that one gets from a smart thermostat installation. Depending on how large your home is, having a smart thermostat can save you as much as $141 per year.

That calculation means that a typical smart thermostat can pay for itself within two years' time.

It can be a major convenience for many small little tasks.

The least surprising advantages of a smart home all involve convenience. Right now, the Amazon Echo can allow you to order items from Amazon via voice commands. It also can answer questions involving trivia and similar things.

Depending on what smart devices you choose, it also can turn on lights, dim them, change the color of home lighting, turn up your thermostat, lock your doors, or turn on your TV. Basically, it saves a lot of time and tedium.

It also can act as a short term house sitter.

The cool thing about smart homes is that they allow you to maintain your home in the best possible way from afar. This means that one of the best advantages of a smart home involves your home literally being able to keep care of itself.

You can program your smart thermostat to slow down while you're away, use a smart security system to guard your house and call the police while you go on vacation, and even use a smart lighting system to make sure that you have a warm light to come home to.

Overall, it improves your overall "welcome home" feeling — all without the need for a house sitter.

Smart devices can also offer you a newer level of security.

A recent news story proved that smart devices are a really smart choice for people who have safety concerns. According to an article by the New York Post, Amazon's Alexa (or a similar device) recently called the police on a man who was allegedly hitting his girlfriend — and possibly saved her life.

Many smart security systems have had similar moments on a fairly regular basis, too. Needless to say, this is one of the best advantages of a smart home in a bad neighborhood.

A smart home also can act as a voice-activated mood-setter.

Look, we've all seen the Amazon commercials where the guy's on a date and tells Alexa to turn down the lights. Believe it or not, there's a ton of ambience-related smart devices out there that make "setting the mood" a cinch, regardless of what "the mood" is supposed to be.

One of the bigger advantages of a smart home is that it's a lot easier to tell your smart home system to play a Spotify list and dim the lights than to go on a computer, blare the list after bringing it up, and then run to the dimmer switch to get that same mood up.

Of course, there's also the advantage of having a smart home as a bragging right.

It's totally okay to admit that one of the more fun advantages of a smart home is being able to brag about it. Smart homes are status symbols, and it's okay to want to flaunt them once in a while. After all, smart homes are cool...and a pretty smart buy, overall.
