Though many would have expected this to be a major tech flop, the ever-present civilian drone is now one of the hottest toys for adults and kids.

Drones are now slowly piling up on store shelves, and the drone community has never been bigger. It's a fun community, and people love talking about their new drones online, too.

If you want to get in on this trend, you might want to learn how to fly a drone before you shell out several hundred dollars for one of the more expensive drones out there. Here's how to learn the ropes, without worrying about destroying a really expensive toy.

First, get a cheap quadcopter.

You can get a cheap drone for under $100, and this is a good way to get a "starter" drone that can teach you how to fly a drone that's more expensive. This way, if you crash it, it won't make too much of a dent in your budget.

Then, check out the controls.

Most drone controls will have four controls, found in two joysticks on the controller: yaw, pitch, throttle, and roll. Here's what you need to know about how to fly a drone using each control...

  • Roll literally makes your drone roll left or right, and is used to make the drone move left or right. This is usually on the right side of the controller.
  • Pitch, which is usually located on the right control, will make the drone move forward or backward.
  • Yaw, on the other hand, is on the left side of the controller. It rotates the drone clockwise or counter clockwise.
  • Throttle makes the drone go forward or backwards.

In order to learn how to fly a drone, you will need to read the manual on your controller. Since many drones are different, you should be given the 411 on your drone design before you fly your drone.

Take your drone out for a tour.

When you're first learning how to fly a drone, you need to choose a good place to start your flights. Look for a wide open field with few trees in the area.

Make sure that your drone is in flying order before you go out. This means that the batteries are charged, SD cards are in (if you're getting camera action in on it), and that you are well-versed in the controller's actions.

Since you're new to flying your drone, you should be careful with the controllers. A gentle touch will do a lot more than you'd think it does. Get a feel for how much pressure you need, then start building your drone flight up.

Learning how to land can be tricky, so we suggest watching a couple of videos that detail how to do this. Slowly lowering the throttle and keeping it parallel to the ground is how to land a drone — and at times, it's harder than it looks.

Practice makes perfect, and don't be afraid to ask for help.

You can't really learn how to fly a drone without practicing, so take your cheap drone out for a bunch of spins before you get a DJI. Practice does make perfect, so if you crash the first couple of times, remember — it's a common mistake.

If you're really struggling, there's also no shame in asking others in your local drone flying community for help. After all, this is one hobby that's best enjoyed in groups.
