How Augmented Reality Will Change the Way We Work

Augmented reality will change the way we work by turning anywhere into an office. But, is that a good thing?

Imagine being able to go to work by just putting on a helmet or wearing the right pair of goggles. If the Microsoft HoloLens or the DAQRI Smart Helmet have their way, that's exactly what will be able to happen.

Augmented reality is technology that allows you to get a view from a headset while also being allowed to see the world around you. So, it's a composite view. Depending on the program running, this could allow you to see details of a job, help guide you through a task, or even let you talk to someone who's not there.

It's clear that augmented reality will change the way we work — but how?

Faster, Hands-Free Work

The biggest way augmented reality will change the way we work is by making work faster and more efficient than before.

The DAQRI Smart Helmet was specially designed to be augmented reality for the workplace. First, it has the ability to download blueprints to the helmet. Second, certain programs also allow people to upload tutorials on how to do the work at hand.

The Smart Helmet can also overlay instructions on what to change, which reduces the need for user manuals in the workplace. By not having people be forced to hold user manuals while they tweak machinery, they can do the job faster.

But, what's awesome about augmented reality is that it can also react to commands you give it. The HoloLens, for example, has gesture control that can change the view you're looking at with a flick of your wrist.

So, perhaps in the future, the DAQRI Smart Helmet will be able to do much of the work for the wearers — which, in turn, would make it possible for them to do more work in a shorter amount of time. Or, maybe this will be a case where AR will become a technology in the education of new trainees. It's hard to tell.

International Meetings and Factory Tours From Afar

The more obvious way that augmented reality will change the way we work is the fact that there will be less need for travel time. AR will make you able to tour places without leaving your home, and have face-to-face conversations with people from China while you're in Belize.

The superimposed view can easily be tweaked to give you a fully immersive experience, too. Collaboration and networking, therefore, will be way easier. (On a random note, this could make long-distance dating and internet VR meetups also equally doable and realistic, too.)

According to Business Insider, Cirque du Soleil also uses augmented reality apps as a way to help design stages and give people an idea of what it'll be like by show time. So, in that sense, the possibilities aren't just limited to the tech, media, or manufacturing industries.

However...

As much as augmented reality will change the way we work, it won't do everything for us. We'll still occasionally need to travel. We might also end up having to grab a manual once in a while, and the truth is that there will always be a human aspect to working that we simply can't replace.
